Margarita Windisch Socialist Alliance Senate Candidate

MARGARITA WINDISCH migrated to Australia 20 years ago and lives in the Western suburbs of Melbourne where she has been involved in a range of community actions.

A founder of the Stop the War Coalition she was an organiser of rallies against Israel’s war on Lebanon and Palestine and many protests calling for troop withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Margarita is very concerned about the erosion of civil liberties occurring in the name of fighting the ‘war on terror’ and the demonisation of Muslim and Arabic communities.

As a trained social worker in the women’s health, housing and disability sectors she witnessed the devastating impact of funding cuts to social services. Margarita has participated in state health conferences and published a pamphlet on sexual assault for people with disabilities. Margarita is a strong supporter of women’s rights and women’s reproductive freedom, helping to organise many events for International Women’s Day over the years.

She has travelled extensively through out Latin America and helped set up the Green Left Weekly news bureau in Venezuela in 2005. She contributes regularly to the newspaper on a range of issues.

Most recently Margarita has also been involved in campaigning for justice for the Indigenous community and an end to black deaths in custody.
